The Day the Jelly Beans Taught Me About Jesus

It all started on a Sunday morning when our Sunday school teacher, Miss Patty, walked in carrying a giant jar of jelly beans. And I mean GIANT—it was bigger than my little brother!

We all gasped. Was it snack time already? Had Miss Patty forgotten about the Bible lesson? Did we just hit the jackpot of all jackpots?

Miss Patty smiled as she placed the jar on the table. “Today, we’re going to learn about Jesus… using jelly beans!”

I nearly fell out of my chair. Jesus… and candy? This was the best Sunday ever.

The Jelly Bean Challenge

Miss Patty reached into the jar and pulled out a green jelly bean. “Green reminds us of the grass and trees God created,” she said. “It’s a reminder that Jesus made everything!”

I nodded while secretly hoping she’d pass the jar around.

Next, she grabbed a yellow jelly bean. “Yellow reminds us of heaven! Jesus made a way for us to be with Him forever!”

I started to drool a little. Heaven sounded amazing, but when could we eat the jelly beans?

Then, she picked up a red jelly bean. “Red reminds us of Jesus’ sacrifice—He gave His life for us because He loves us.”

I started to feel a little guilty for being more focused on candy than on Jesus. But then she held up a white jelly bean. “White means we’re clean when we believe in Him!”

Now that one sounded important. Clean? Like after a bath? Because my mom says I still smell like peanut butter no matter how many times I wash.

Finally, she picked up a purple jelly bean. “Purple is for Jesus being our King! He’s powerful, loving, and rules over all.”

The Great Jelly Bean Disaster

At this point, I could barely handle it. The jar was right there. I had listened so patiently. I had learned about Jesus. I deserved a jelly bean!

So, while Miss Patty was explaining how we could use jelly beans to share Jesus with others, I slowly reached for the jar. Just one. Just a little taste of God’s creation.

But disaster struck.

My elbow hit the edge of the table. The jar wobbled. I froze. The whole room gasped. And then—BOOM!

Jelly beans exploded everywhere.

They bounced off chairs, rolled under tables, and shot across the floor. Kids scrambled to grab them. Miss Patty’s mouth dropped open.

And that’s when I learned about consequences.

A Sweet Lesson About Jesus

Miss Patty helped us clean up, and I thought for sure I’d never get a jelly bean again. But instead, she handed me one with a smile.

“Jesus forgives us even when we mess up,” she said, winking. “But next time, let’s ask instead of sneaking.”

I nodded, chewing my jelly bean slowly. It was the sweetest lesson I had ever learned.

Moral of the Story:

  1. Be patient! God’s blessings (and jelly beans) come in the right time.
  2. Jesus forgives us even when we make mistakes—but we should still try to do the right thing.
  3. We can use anything—even candy—to share Jesus with others!

And from that day on, every time I saw a jelly bean, I didn’t just think about candy… I thought about Jesus. 🍬✨

The End.

Proverbs 3:5-6 (KJV)

"Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths."

This verse teaches about trusting God (instead of sneaking jelly beans!) and waiting for His timing. It also reminds us that when we follow Jesus, He helps guide us to make the right choices—just like the lesson Miss Patty shared after the great jelly bean disaster! 🍬✨
