🐣🧁 The Chick Who Thought the Muffins Could Pray

With a toddler-friendly Bible story, craft, snack, pretend play, and scripture-based song, this lesson teaches kids that prayer comes from the heart—not from cupcakes! Perfect for Sunday School, preschool, children’s church, or homeschool.

✝️ Bible Theme:

Prayer comes from the heart

📖 Bible Verse (Toddler Version):

“Never stop praying.” – 1 Thessalonians 5:17

💬 Main Point to Repeat with Kids:

“God wants to hear ME pray!”

📘 Toddler-Friendly Story:

“The Chick Who Thought the Muffins Could Pray”

Stevie the Chick had heard a lot about prayer.

Mama said to pray when he felt scared.
Grandpa said to pray when he needed help.
His big brother said, “Pray when you don’t know what to do!”

So Stevie decided to try it.

But Stevie was shy. He was nervous. He didn’t know what words to say.

So he made a plan.

He gathered all his muffins—blueberry, chocolate chip, banana nut—and placed them in a circle.
Then he whispered,

“Okay muffins… pray for me!”

He waited.
The muffins sat quietly.
They didn’t blink. They didn’t speak. They didn’t say “Amen.”

Stevie frowned. “Maybe they’re sleepy muffins.”

He shook a sprinkle on top. “That should help!”

Still nothing.

So Stevie did something brave. He said out loud,

“Dear God… I don’t know what to say. But I love You. And I need You.”

Suddenly, his heart felt warm and peaceful. He smiled big.

“That’s prayer,” said Mama Chick, peeking in. “Not muffin prayer. YOUR prayer.”

And from that day on, Stevie never asked a muffin to pray again—because he knew God wanted to hear from HIM.

🎲 Activity/Game:

“Prayer Muffin Pass”

Sit in a circle and pass a (pretend) muffin around while soft music plays.
When the music stops, the child holding the muffin says:

“God, thank You for…” (and names anything!)

They can also whisper or say “Amen” if they’re shy—because prayer is from the heart.

🎨 Craft:

“Stevie and the Praying Muffin” Craft

Supplies:

  • Yellow construction paper (for Stevie the chick)

  • Muffin cup or cupcake cutout

  • Crayons or markers

  • Glue

  • Heart cutouts

Directions:

  1. Glue the muffin on paper.

  2. Add a big yellow chick beside it with eyes and a beak.

  3. Surround the muffin with hearts, showing prayer comes from your heart.

  4. Write: “God wants to hear ME pray! – 1 Thessalonians 5:17”

🍎 Snack Idea:

Mini Muffins & Heart Napkins

Serve mini muffins on napkins with a heart drawn or sticker added.
Let kids pray before snack time and say:

“I can pray to God anytime!”

Encourage each child to say “Thank You, God!” before they eat.

🎵 Song:

“God Wants Me to Pray”
(Tune: “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star”)

Muffins cannot pray for me,
Even if they’re blueberry!
God wants me to say the words,
Even if they’re soft or heard.
Prayer comes right from my heart,
God and I are never far!

📝 Poem:

Stevie’s Prayer Surprise

Stevie was shy, and didn’t know
How to let his prayers just flow.
He lined up muffins in a row—
But they just sat, and didn’t go!
Then Stevie said, “Dear God, it’s me…”
And felt as brave as he could be!

🎭 Pretend Play Game:

“Prayer Bakery”

Set up a pretend muffin shop with play food or real muffin cups.
Kids “order” muffins and “pay” by saying a prayer!
(Ex: “I’d like a blueberry muffin... and I’ll thank God for my dog!”)

🙏 Closing Prayer (Repeat After Me):

Dear God,
I don’t need muffins to pray.
You want to hear from me!
Even when I’m shy,
You still listen.
Thank You for loving me.
Amen!

📬 Optional Take-Home Note for Parents:

Today we met Stevie the Chick, who learned that muffins can’t pray—but he sure can! We taught your child that prayer is simply talking to God from the heart. Encourage your child to say little prayers this week, no matter how simple they sound.

💡 What We’re Learning:

This lesson shows that prayer doesn’t have to be fancy or perfect—God just wants to hear from us! Stevie’s silly mistake helps children understand that it’s their voice and their heart God is listening to. Based on 1 Thessalonians 5:17, this lesson reminds toddlers to pray always, even in the simplest ways.
