🍎 The Apple Tree That Waited

With a sweet Bible story about patience, a fun apple craft, simple waiting game, and joyful song, this fall lesson is perfect for Sunday School, preschool, children’s church, and homeschool.

📖 Bible Theme:

Learning to wait patiently and trust God's perfect timing.

Bible Verse (Toddler-Friendly):

“Wait for the Lord.” – Psalm 27:14

Main Point to Repeat:

“I can wait for God’s perfect time.”

📚 Toddler Story:

In a sunny orchard stood a little apple tree named Johnny.
Johnny looked up at the big apple trees and said,
“I want to grow big apples—right now!”

But his apples were still tiny and green.
“I don’t want to wait,” Johnny said with a sigh.
“Why can’t I grow fast like them?”

Then the wind whispered through the leaves:
“Wait for the Lord. God knows the perfect time.”

Johnny waited as the sun warmed his branches.
He waited as the rain gave his roots a drink.
Day by day, his apples grew bigger… and redder… and juicier.

One morning, Johnny looked down and smiled,
“Wow! God really did help me grow — just in time!”
Johnny learned that God makes everything grow at the perfect time.

Now, Johnny tells all the little trees:
“You can wait too — God’s timing is always best!”

🎲 Activity – Apple Waiting Game

Let the kids take turns pretending to be apple trees.
Have them stand still, close their eyes, and “wait” while you count slowly.

Then say, “Now it’s the right time!” and let them “grow” — stretch arms and jump!
Repeat while saying, “I can wait for God’s perfect time.”

🎵Wait For The Lord Song

Johnny the apple tree wanted to grow,
He wanted big apples, but they came slow.
The wind said, “Johnny, don’t you fuss or fight,
God makes things grow in His time, just right.”

Wait, wait, wait for the Lord,
Wait, wait, wait for the Lord,
Be strong, take heart, and trust His way,
God’s perfect time is worth the wait.

The sun came shining, the rain came too,
Day by day the apples grew.
Johnny learned patience, he smiled and said,
“I’ll trust in God and His plan instead.”

Wait, wait, wait for the Lord,
Wait, wait, wait for the Lord,
Be strong, take heart, and trust His way,
God’s perfect time is worth the wait.

🎵Johnny the Apple Tree Song”

(To the tune of “London Bridge”):

🎶
I can wait for God’s good time,
God’s good time, God’s good time,
I can wait for God’s good time,
He knows what is best!

He will help me grow each day,
Grow each day, grow each day,
He will help me grow each day,
I can trust and rest!

✍️ Poem:

Johnny wanted apples fast,
But God’s plan was built to last.
He learned to wait and not to fuss,
And God grew fruit — just right for us!

Let’s Talk About It:

  • Who wanted to grow fast? (Johnny the apple tree)

  • What did Johnny learn? (To wait for God’s time)

  • Who helps us grow and learn? (God!)

🙏 Closing Prayer (Repeat After Me):

Dear God,
Thank You for growing me in Your perfect time.
Help me be patient and trust You.
Even when it’s hard to wait,
I know You love me.
Amen.

📬 Optional Take-Home Note for Parents:

Today we learned about Johnny the Apple Tree, who wanted to grow big apples fast! But he discovered that God has the perfect time for everything — and that waiting can be a good thing. Remind your child this week:
“I can wait for God’s perfect time.”

🌟 Adaptive Learning – How Everyone Can Join In

📚 Story Time

  • Use a large picture or prop of an apple tree so children can see and touch.

  • For nonverbal kids: let them point to pictures of apples, sun, or rain when mentioned in the story.

  • Provide a soft red ball (apple) for kids to hold as you tell the story, passing it when Johnny “waits.”

🎲 Activity – Apple Waiting Game

  • If children cannot stand and stretch, they can nod, tap, or use a sound button to signal when it’s the “right time” to grow.

  • A helper can gently lift a child’s arms when it’s time to “grow.”

  • For children with limited mobility, use scarves or leaves to wave when God’s timing comes.

🎨 Craft – Apple Patience Tree

  • Pre-cut trunk and tree shapes so kids only need to glue.

  • Offer dot stickers or large crumpled tissue “apples” for children who struggle with fine motor skills.

  • For nonverbal children, let them point or use gaze/gesture to choose where each apple goes, while a helper sticks it on.

  • Use adaptive tools like Velcro dots or thicker crayons for easier grip.

🖍️ Coloring Page

  • Provide chunky crayons, markers, or adaptive holders.

  • If a child cannot color, they can choose apple colors for a buddy or press a button that says “red” or “green.”

🍎 Snack – Apple Slice Smiles

  • Allow children to choose dip (yogurt, peanut butter, or none) by pointing or pressing a choice card.

  • For children with dietary restrictions, offer a substitute fruit (pear, banana).

🎵 Song & Poem

  • Record a simple phrase like “Wait for God’s time!” on a button for children to press during the song.

  • Use rhythm sticks, shakers, or wrist/ankle bells for kids with limited mobility to join in the music.

🎭 Pretend Play (Optional)

  • If acting out Johnny the Apple Tree is hard, a child can be the “time caller,” saying (or pressing a button): “It’s God’s time!” to help the others “grow.”

💛 Special Inclusion Note

Even if a child cannot glue, color, or move like others, they can still participate through choices, smiles, sounds, or signals. Every child can celebrate God’s truth:
“I can wait for God’s perfect time.”
