“God gives us what we need.” – Ruth 2:12 (toddler version)

💬 Main Point to Repeat with Kids

“God takes care of me.”

📚 Toddler-Friendly Story

Ruth was a kind woman who loved her family. She and her mother-in-law, Naomi, needed food. So Ruth went out to the fields to gather leftover grain. She worked hard picking up little pieces of grain from the ground.

A kind man named Boaz owned the field. He saw Ruth working and said, “You may gather grain here, and I will make sure you have enough food.” Ruth was thankful, and she shared the food with Naomi.

God took care of Ruth and Naomi through the kindness of Boaz. And God takes care of us too!

🎲 Activity: Gather the Grain

Scatter craft sticks or pieces of yellow paper (“grain”) around the room. Give each child a small basket or paper bag. Let them gather the “grain” and bring it back. Say together:
“God gives us what we need!”

🌟 Adaptive Learning – How Everyone Can Join In

Children of all abilities can enjoy and participate in this lesson. Below are specific ways to include children with limited mobility, nonverbal communication, or children without arms or legs.

📚 Story Time

  • Visual Support: Use large picture cards of Ruth, Boaz, and grain. The child can point with eyes or nod when asked, “Who is this?”

  • Tactile Option: Offer a bundle of dried wheat or a piece of fabric with grain texture to hold with feet, chin, or assisted by a helper.

  • Participation Role: Pause during the story and let the child say (or press a sound button for) words like “Ruth” or “God.”

🎲 Activity/Game – Gather the Grain

  • Tray-Based Alternative: Place paper “grain” (strips or popsicle sticks) on a tray within reach. The child can sweep them into a basket using a foot, pointer, or helper’s hand.

  • Leader Role: Let the child be the “caller” who says “Go!” and “Stop!” with their voice or a sound button.

  • Group Participation: Allow them to choose (by yes/no cards) which classmate gathers next.

🎨 Craft – Paper Grain Bundle

  • Pre-Cut Pieces: Provide ready-to-use yellow strips and a brown band. The child can direct a helper where to glue each piece.

  • Velcro Option: Instead of glue, use Velcro-backed strips so they can press pieces down with a foot or pointer.

  • Choice-Making: Offer 2–3 shades of “grain” (yellow, tan, gold) for the child to select, even with a glance.

🎵 Song – “Ruth Gathers Grain”

  • Motion Alternative: The class can pretend to gather grain. The child can join by leading rhythm with a shaker strapped to a foot or wristband, or press a button to play “God takes care of us!”

  • Verbal/Nonverbal: If verbal, encourage them to say one repeated phrase; if nonverbal, a sound button or eye contact when the group sings the phrase includes them fully.

🍎 Snack – Grain Crackers & Cheese

  • Serving Role: Even if eating is difficult, the child can help serve by directing a peer to place crackers and cheese on napkins.

  • Choice Role: Provide picture cards for “cracker” or “cheese,” letting them decide what the group eats first.

  • Inclusion: They can lead the blessing prayer or press a voice button that says, “Thank You, God, for food.”

❓ Questions

  • Provide laminated picture cards (Ruth, Boaz, God). Ask:

    1. Who gathered the grain? Ruth

    2. Who helped Ruth? Boaz

    3. Who gives us what we need? God

  • The child can answer by looking at or signaling the correct card.

💛 Special Inclusion Note

Even if a child does not have arms or legs, they can still fully enjoy the lesson through their voice, choices, and creativity.

  • Voice: Answering questions, leading prayer, or calling out game actions.

  • Choices: Selecting craft colors, snack items, or who takes the next turn.

  • Creativity: Directing a helper where to place craft pieces or how to act out part of the story.

  • Leadership: Using a sound button, picture cards, or signals to guide the group’s activity.

Every child should know: God’s love and truth are for them too. 💛
