🌸 Bible Theme

Don’t Judge by What You See – God Sees the Heart

📖 Bible Verse (Toddler Version)

1 Samuel 16:7
“People look at the outside, but the Lord looks at the heart.”

💛 Main Point to Repeat With Kids

“God sees my heart.”

(Have children place their hands over their hearts and say it together.)

📖 Toddler Friendly Story

In a sunny spring garden, all the animals were buzzing around the flowers.

A bunny hopped by and stopped.
“Look at that brown lump hanging from the branch,” he said. “It’s not pretty at all.”

A squirrel flicked his tail.
“It just looks like a dry leaf.”

A bluebird tilted her head.
“It doesn’t sparkle like the flowers.”

But down below, a slow and wise turtle looked up and smiled.
“Shhh,” he said softly. “You don’t know what God is doing inside.”

Days went by. The brown cocoon just hung there. It didn’t shine. It didn’t sing. It didn’t sparkle.

Then one morning…

Wiggle.

Shake.

Crack!

The cocoon opened… and out came the most beautiful butterfly anyone had ever seen! Her wings were bright and colorful, shining in the sunshine.

The bunny gasped.
The squirrel blinked.
The bluebird chirped with surprise.

The turtle smiled again.
“See?” he said. “God was working on the inside all along.”

Sometimes people look plain or small on the outside. But God sees the beautiful heart inside.

And that’s what matters most.

🎲 Activity – “Inside and Outside” Game

Bring two boxes:

  • One plain brown box

  • One colorful decorated box

Inside both boxes, place a small heart cutout.

Let children guess which one has something special inside.

Open both.

Explain: “They both have something special! God looks at our hearts, not just the outside.”

Repeat together: “God sees my heart.”

A little brown cocoon
Hung quietly on a tree,
It didn’t look like very much
To you or even me.

God sees my heart, shining bright,
Even when I look small.
He makes something beautiful,
He sees it all, He sees it all!

But God was working quietly,
Where no one else could see,
And out came something beautiful —
Just like God made me!

God sees my heart, shining bright,
Even when I look small.
He makes something beautiful,
He sees it all, He sees it all!

🌼 Poem

A little brown cocoon
Hung quietly on a tree,
It didn’t look like very much
To you or even me.

But God was working quietly,
Where no one else could see,
And out came something beautiful —
Just like God made me!

🎭 Pretend Play

Create a “Garden Corner” in the classroom.

Let children:

  • Pretend to be caterpillars crawling.

  • Curl up into a “cocoon.”

  • Slowly stand and stretch arms wide like butterfly wings.

Teacher says:
“God sees your heart growing!”

📚 What We’re Learning

Children are learning that:

  • God sees their hearts.

  • We shouldn’t judge others by how they look.

  • God is working inside us even when we can’t see it.

📝 Teacher Reflection

This lesson gently reminds children that value does not come from appearance. Preschoolers are just beginning to notice differences in others. This is a foundational moment to teach kindness and empathy.

Reinforce throughout the week:
“God sees your heart.”

💌 Take-Home Note for Parents

Today we learned that God sees our hearts! We talked about how a cocoon may look plain on the outside, but something beautiful is growing inside.

This week, ask your child:
“What does God see?”

Encourage them to show kindness and remember that God cares about what’s inside.
